Emma is a freelance illustrator based in Kapiti, New Zealand. She has been working on a professional basis since 2007. Emma’s first book, Jack and the Beanstalk, was published in 2010. That Kind of Planet, a collection of short comics, was published in 2016 and won the Sir Julius Vogel Award for best production/publication in 2017. Emma has also won the Sir Julius Vogel award in 2008, 2014, and 2017 for best professional artwork. Emma uses a mixture of traditional drawing and digital painting. Her experience is largely with science fiction, fantasy and children’s illustration and comics.

1. Tell us about your recent publications/projects?
My most recent publication is the cover of the ConZealand edition of Aurealis.
2. What has been the best publishing or SF community experience of your career so far?
My collection of short comics, That Kind of Planet was the biggest learning experience, and I’m always grateful for how patient and hardworking Kelly Buchanan was through that process.
3. Which recent Australian/NZ work would you recommend to international fans interested in expanding their Antipodean spec fic knowledge?
I have a special affection for From a Shadow Grave, by Andi C. Buchanan
